What actually needs to come off?

Thickness and damming are the two things I look for when considering physical removal. Is there a substantial mat that won’t readily release? Is the buildup catching debris and water? Those give the work a purpose.

Once those problems are addressed, I reassess. Smaller growth may be suitable for treatment and weathering. The condition of your shingles and their manufacturer’s instructions still govern the method.

Every last speck. At what cost?

We could keep working toward a completely spotless photograph. But what would the extra pass achieve? What would it use in water, labour and contact with the shingles?

You’ve already paid for this roof. I want our maintenance decisions to respect the years of work it still has to do. We agree on the intended result before we start, including what may remain visible.

What happens after treatment?

Treatment doesn’t make accumulated material vanish. We discuss which buildup needs addressing and which treated growth can be left to release through weathering. The timing depends on the roof, the growth and the conditions.

Our Aether process for shingle roofs uses a non-sodium-hypochlorite treatment. Product choice is one part of the job. We still need to consider the roofing material, application and where the runoff goes.

Why go easy on the shingles?

IKO’s moss guidance warns against scrubbing, allows gentle lifting of loosened moss and says not to chase firmly attached growth with a brush or pressure washer. CertainTeed describes gentle brushing after treatment. Instructions differ, so we check what applies to the roof in front of us.

If the roofing is already deteriorated, cleaning may not be the right next step. We’ll tell you when it needs a roofing professional’s attention.

Tell us about the buildup, overflowing gutters or changes you’re seeing. Photos from a safe place are useful. There’s no need to climb onto the roof to show us.
