Why moss thrives on shaded Cowichan roofs

The roof on one side of the house may stay damp for hours longer than the other. That difference is often the whole story.

A roof has microclimates

North-facing slopes commonly receive less direct sunlight and dry more slowly. Overhanging trees add shade and shed needles and leaves, while valleys and corners can trap debris.

Vancouver Island's wetter seasons make those conditions relevant, but individual properties can behave differently even along the same street.

Cleaning is not climate control

A successful cleaning does not change the roof's orientation, surrounding trees or future weather. Moss spores can arrive again, and growth can return when the same damp conditions persist.

That is why a maintenance plan is more credible than promising that one application makes a shaded roof permanently moss-proof.

Work with the setting

Clear reachable debris safely, keep gutters flowing, and discuss selective tree care where appropriate. Avoid indiscriminate pruning; trees provide their own environmental benefits and may require qualified care.

Assess the roof condition and manufacturer's recommendations before selecting a cleaning method.
