Roof rejuvenation sprays: what should a homeowner ask?

Products promising to restore aging asphalt shingles deserve the same scrutiny as cleaning products.

What is being promised?

Some businesses market field-applied coatings or rejuvenators to extend roof life or change how shingles perform. Those are substantial performance claims, not simply a cleaning result.

ARMA's current technical guidance strongly advises against field-applied coatings or rejuvenators on installed asphalt shingles and recommends consulting the actual shingle manufacturer.

Cleaning and restoration are different

Removing organic growth does not replace granules, repair failed seals, or renew degraded roofing layers. A clean roof may still require replacement.

Ask for independent performance evidence, compatibility information, material warranty consequences and the precise scope of any guarantee.

The preservation-first answer

Sometimes the best decision is to maintain a serviceable roof. Other times a qualified roofer should determine whether cleaning or a rejuvenation claim is beside the point.

Our goal is to help homeowners understand that difference without promising to reverse aging.
