Why clogged gutters and roof moss often appear together
The same trees that shade a roof can fill its gutters. The two problems share a setting, but they are not interchangeable.
A shared environment
Fir needles, deciduous leaves and organic debris can accumulate along roof edges, in valleys and in gutters. Moisture held by debris can contribute to the conditions in which roof growth persists.
ARMA recommends regular non-abrasive debris removal and maintaining functioning gutters as part of roof care.
The important distinction
Moss on the roof does not prove a gutter is blocked, and a full gutter does not prove moss has damaged the shingles. A thorough exterior assessment looks at each condition separately.
Clogs can cause overflow and direct water where it was not intended, which is one reason late-season gutter maintenance is practical in heavily treed neighbourhoods.
The autumn check
Look from the ground for visibly overflowing gutter runs, sagging, downspout discharge against the home and piles of leaf litter. Use a trained professional for work at height.
Valley Wise provides gutter cleaning separately or as part of an exterior-maintenance visit.
