Joseph’s field notes · Practical advice

One mark left on the siding. Do we keep going?

Before another pass, I want to know what it would achieve and what it would use up.

Watch the siding wash explained

In this short video, I explain the Aether treatment used on this siding and the thinking behind the process.

What are we trying to remove?

Say we’re washing siding and there’s a stubborn mark left. We could keep going. More water, another application, another pass. But first I want to understand what we’re looking at.

Is it growth or dirt? Is it staining or weathering? Is the finish itself changing? The answer matters before we decide what else to do.

A good finish matters. So does the cost of getting there

I want to explain what we can reasonably improve and where the material limits the result. That conversation belongs before we chase a mark for the sake of saying we got everything.

Water use, treatment use, contact with the surface and runoff all belong in the decision. More effort is useful when it produces a worthwhile result. It still needs a reason.

Agree on what a good job looks like

Show me what’s bothering you. We’ll look at the surface, discuss the likely result and decide on a sensible scope.

The standard I want us to hold ourselves to is being able to explain the next pass—and being willing to stop when it doesn’t make sense.
